linux, lug, etc.

I went to my first RiVaLUG meeting in quite some time last night. There were a few familiar faces, and a lot of new ones (for me anyway). It was nice to have an evening of geek comraderie once again. I think I've waited long enough that the sort of cult of personality of me has worn off the group. They've maintained the interest and kept the meetings going for 2 years without me. It's nice to see the group isn't dependent on one person (me) anymore. (Just in case anyone is wondering, if/when we have officers, I will decline any and all nominations, so don't even ask.)

I'm going to be nuking my windows box tomorrow. I really don't play games anymore. I don't know why. They just don't seem to hold my interest. Maybe I can sell mine and make some $$ back. Probably not though.

Anyway, I've been thinking about distributions. I used to use Sorcery, which is a cool source based distro, but the project still appears to be in a transition phase since the fork from the original developer earlier this year. I've used SuSe, RedHat, Debian, Slackware, yggradsil. Slack and Sorcery seemed to fit my taste better. SuSe and Debian I found painful (Debian's great, don't get me wrong, apt-get is cool, but the install HURTS. SuSe is just... well... German.). Gentoo sounds cool (another source based distro), but it's a whole new package management and build system to learn. I'll probably just go with the path of least resistance and go the RedHat route.

My other computer is a Mac OS X box, so once this install is complete, I'll be 100% unix, 0% microsoft (after I delete Internet Exploder offa my Mac anyway, lol).

the south

Sometimes I really, really hate the south. Other times I love it.

I hate the pomposity. I hate the fake chivalry. I hate the double talk and 2-facedness. I hate the religious and moral codes. I hate the heat and humidity. I mostly hate the accent. I hate Nascar and everything "country". I hate "y'all".

I love the accent on a beautiful girl. :) I love the food (fried, fatty, kickass barbecue and Krispy Kreme!). But mostly I love it 'cause it's home.

drought continues

Although we've had a couple days of rain here recently, the drought has worsened. It is now illegal to water lawns and wash cars (unless you're a golf course or a commercial car wash) for most of the state of Virginia. It's getting close to the point of needing to truck in drinking water.

When I was younger something like this happened, except I think it was some sort of protozoan in the water. I remember going up to the fire station in the neighborhood to pickup gallon jugs for cooking and drinking. It wasn't fun. Water conservation is important, so it will help to follow this simple rule: if it's brown, flush it down, if it's yellow, let it mellow! That and cutting back on shower times helps too.

the home front

My apartment is progresing rather nicely, although I'm afraid I'll wind up going way over budget. I recently purchased 2 folding screens, one for either side of my fish tank. The one on the right serves to hide my ferret D'argo, and the other hides the uninterruptable power supply that's juicing the fish tank filters. I'm going to replace the beige fabric on them though with a dark blue or dark green fabric with silver in it (I haven't gone looking at fabric yet).

I also setup my speaker stands for my rear channel speakers, and ran the cables along the base boards under the carpet. They're invisible, and it's nice to have surround sound again.

My parents gave me their old dining table (they tried to sell it at a yard sale, but nobody wanted it. I'm probably going to paint most of it black, but I'm thinking about doing the top in chrome. SHINY!

Lastly, since I have no other space in the apartment, the cat box has been in the living room. I don't particularly like that idea, but there isn't much I can do about it. So I purchased a multimedia shelf system that's now right next to my TV, and at least blocks the cat box from view.

Now only if I could get my laundry done and my bedroom cleaned up!
