My Mac Apps

Several folks, knowing me to be an avid Apple user, have recently asked for software recommendations. Rather than sending everybody a separate email, I thought I'd just post my opinions here. I tend to favor free apps over commercial ones, where they'll do the job.
  • MenuMeters - system stats in your menubar.
  • Growl - provides customizable system notifications.
  • Burn - very good free cd/dvd burner.
  • Disco - a very pretty cd/dvd burner, shareware.
  • iWork - Apples' very own office suite.
  • NeoOffice - a free office suite alternative.
  • Microsoft Office - when nothing else will do.
  • Apple's TextEdit - a built-in app for editing text files.
  • Smultron - a programmers text editor.
  • TextWrangler - another good text editor.
  • CUPS-PDF - print to PDF. can come in handy when export lets you down.
  • PDF+PDF - widget to do simple pdf merging.
  • PDFMergeX - combine multiple pdfs, rearrange and remove pages, etc.
  • Connect To Server - Mount smb, nfs, ftp, and webdav using built-in tools.
  • MacFusion - It does much the same thing a the Connect To Server, but it also supports SFTP. It sits on top of MacFUSE
  • Cyberduck - a traditional FTP/SFTP client.
  • NuFile - gives right click -> new file in the finder.
  • WinShortcutter - change your windows network password from System Preferences.
  • Perian - provides multiple codec support.
  • DivX - provides DivX support.
  • Flip4Mac - rounds things out with Windows Media support.
  • MpegStreamClip - quick mpeg video editing.
  • Handbrake - rips DVD's, and encodes them in various formats.
